FINAL CRITIQUE/PORTFOLIOS

IT'S FINAL EXAM TIME!!!

In lieu of an exam, we will have a final critique over the self portraits. You need to bring the following three drawings to the final meeting: 1) the handkerchief 2) the plaster head 3) the self portrait. Also, if you'd like, bring a drink or snack to share with the class. We will have a relaxed and fun final day. I will grade your portfolios immediately after we are done with the critique, and you may pick up your work in the drawing room later that day.

MWF class final critique is: TUESDAY, MAY 4, 10:30-12:30.

MW class final critique is: THURSDAY, MAY 6, 10:30-12:30.

Portfolios for both classes will be graded and available for pickup after 3pm on the day of the critique.

HOMEWORK #7 - Hands

In your sketchbook, in pencil (regular graphite, not charcoal) draw your own hand with as much realistic detail as possible. There should be a range of values from light to dark, which means you might need to use a lamp or another light source for highlights. As you draw, look at your actual hand, not a photo of your hand. And be sure to hold your hand in a comfortable, yet visually interesting position. Crossed fingers will be more interesting to draw and look at than a flat hand (and trust me, it will be easier to draw a hand with some angles or crossed fingers... a flat hand with straight fingers will probably end up looking like a glove.) Here are some examples of hand drawings:

NO HOMEWORK

There is no homework for next week. Instead, you should focus on preparing your portfolios. The portfolio should include the paper airplanes and two gestures of your choice (toys, skulls, ellipse still life - choose any two from those.)

MW class portfolios are due Monday 3/29

MWF class portfolios are due Wednesday 3/31

HOMEWORK #6 - Chiaroscuro Sphere

Now that we've started value drawings (drawings with highlights, shadows, and midtones), let's practice making smooth gradations of values. If you apply subtle gradations of value to a flat circle, the circle looks like a sphere - it creates the illusion of three-dimensional mass. This subtle gradation of values is called "chiaroscuro." In your sketchbook, in pencil, draw the chiaroscuro sphere and value chart shown below. Draw everything you see, including the horizon line and cast shadow.

(MW class due Wednesday, March 24, MWF class due Friday, March 26)

HOMEWORK #5 - Gesture

Do a 20 minute sustained gesture of an object of your choice. The drawing should have LOTS of lines, and those lines should build up and build up over the 20 minutes so that you can show a range of values. Remember, gesture drawing is not contour drawing, meaning that you should NOT show only the outer edges of the object. Show the essence of the object... Make it come to life through energetic markmaking. Please write your start time and stop time in the lower right corner.

HOMEWORK # 4 - Perspective

Now that you are all masters at measuring proportion and angles, let's try something a little trickier: 1 point perspective in architecture. Look at the following five images of hallways and choose any TWO of the five to draw (use a pencil, not charcoal). Do not use any shading - you should not be concerned with light and dark values yet - just work on the contour outlines of what you see. Draw one image per page in your sketchbook, and use your measure stick to figure out angles and proportion. Remember to look at your measure stick and ask yourself "What time is it?" Measure! Measure! Measure!

HOMEWORK #3 - Structural Leaf

Look at the example of a structural leaf drawing (it's the same one I handed out in class.) Notice how the drawing is made up of a whole bunch of long straight lines. Also notice that drop lines, cross lines, and angle marks are visible - the artist showed the entire thought process through the markmaking:

Now... Look at the image below of an oak leaf, and draw it in your sketchbook in that same structural style. I want to see lots of straight lines - even in the curved areas. You should show cross lines and drop lines - this will help keep the proportions correct. The oak leaf has a bunch of pointed edges, so those points are great spots to use for drop lines and cross lines (what is directly above/below and across from each pointy edge?) Draw with a regular graphite pencil, and draw lightly. Once everything is in the correct proportion, work on creating a variety of line thickness to create an interesting drawing.
